Recipe: Anti-inflammatory Turmeric Tea Latte

Recipe: Anti-inflammatory Turmeric Tea Latte

Turmeric lattes are all the rage in the health world these days, and this is one of my favourite recipes – I often find myself passing it along to my patients. Turmeric has wonderful anti-inflammatory properties. For any inflammatory or pain condition, I often recommend increasing dietary intake of anti-inflammatory foods and herbs (such as turmeric), and this latte is a delicious way to make that happen. Not only is turmeric anti-inflammatory, but it also has antioxidant properties, supports liver detox, and is helpful for depression. The medicinal extract in turmeric is called “curcumin” and is also available in supplement form. Studies have shown that curcumin is best absorbed with the help of two nutrients: fat (ex. coconut milk, or attached to a lipid molecule in supplements) and black pepper. This recipe includes a crack of black pepper for this reason. Give this recipe a go, and then slowly increase the turmeric content, or adjust the ingredients to your liking. This recipe comes from Meghan Telpner’s original recipe.

INGREDIENTS

• 1 tsp cinnamon

• pinch of clove

• pinch of nutmeg

• 1 tsp fresh ginger (optional, but highly recommended)

• pinch of fresh ground black pepper

• As much turmeric as you can handle! Start with 1 teaspoon and go up from there.

• 1-2 cups of water

• Raw honey to sweeten

• Milk sub of choice (I recommend using a milk alternative such as cashew milk, coconut milk, almond, hemp, or soy milk)

• Optional Make it bulletproof by adding 1tsp-1Tbsp MCT oil or coconut oil

DIRECTIONS

Option 1: Stove top method

• Simmer herbs and water together for 10 mins.

• Strain out and add honey and milk.

Option 2: Blender method

• Boil water in your kettle and add to blender (a blender with gradual speed increase will reduce likely hood of pressure from steam of boiled water exploding out of your blender).

• Add in spices and blend until smooth and unified in colour.

• Strain out tea and add milk and honey.
