What is a therapeutic diet?
A therapeutic diet is a meal plan that controls the intake of certain foods or nutrients in the treatment or management of certain diseases, illnesses or medical conditions. Depending on your health status, certain dietary modifications may be advised to help reduce symptoms, eliminate inflammation, heal the gut lining, or prevent progression of certain disease processes. Some therapeutic diets are used short term (2-3 months), while others are incorporated as part of long term management of chronic disease. For example, a diet that focuses on low glycemic index foods are recommended as lifelong choices for individuals with diabetes, while the Anti-Candida Diet is recommended as a shorter-term protocol to reduce candida symptoms.
